"Access to quality prenatal care should not be a privilege — it is a right every mother deserves." — Dr. Bhavya, Senior Fetal Medicine Specialist
In a landmark initiative aimed at bridging the healthcare gap in rural Bihar, The Fetal Medicine Clinic, Begusarai, organized a large-scale Free Prenatal Health Camp on March 15, 2024. Over 200 expecting mothers from Begusarai and surrounding districts including Khagaria, Samastipur, and Darbhanga were screened and counselled.
The one-day camp was held at the clinic premises and a partnering community hall nearby. A full medical team of doctors, nurses, and sonologists worked from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM to serve the patients.
Bihar has one of the highest maternal mortality rates in India. A significant portion of pregnancy-related complications could be prevented with early diagnosis and timely intervention. The clinic's team identified over 85 high-risk pregnancies during this camp — cases that may have otherwise gone undetected until serious complications arose.
Several participants were first-time mothers from villages who had never received professional prenatal guidance. The camp served as their first contact with specialized fetal medicine care.
The response was overwhelming. Many mothers arrived with their families from distances of over 30 kilometres. Local NGOs, Aanganwadi workers, and ASHA workers partnered with the clinic to spread awareness and help with logistics.
Volunteers from local medical colleges assisted in patient registration, basic triage, and educational sessions, making the event a true community effort.
Encouraged by the response, the clinic has announced quarterly health camps throughout 2024, with the next one planned for June 2024. The clinic has also launched a subsidized prenatal package for below-poverty-line (BPL) cardholders.
